28 February 1895 — Cairo
Thursday. 28th February [1895]. A tremendous Khamsin blowing when we got up this morning so that one could not breakfast on the terrace. I had rather a headache from it & remained in my room till lunch. Elaine & Aline came & sat in my room to paint—they copied a sketch in black & white & I superintended. After lunch I copied another of Mr McKinnon’s sketches of Mt Etna. I kept my room cool by closing the windows the rest of the house was unsupportable & the temp. up to 95½º. In my room abt 74º. Elaine finds that Mr M. & Aline have come to some kind of understanding & hopes still that they may come together. Lady V. who yesterday was all vinegar to the girl seemed today much mollified. I wrote letters & read & did not go out.
