1 March 1895 — Cairo | |
Friday. 1st March [1895]. Much cooler today. Yesterday’s temperature did not return. It was only 87º at the hottest. Aline Lambton was unwell– Lady Victoria, Elaine, Mr Lambton & Mr Mossop drove in to Cairo after lunch to see a Polo match & Elaine went to the dentist as she had a toothache. I took care of Aline & sat by her bedside most of the afternoon. As I sat by her as she slept I could not help looking back to this day last year when Henry & I were together at Rome—& how little I could then forsee that this day I should be sitting with a person, then an utter stranger to me, in a strange land & without him! Truly His ways are not our ways! | |
