9 March 1895 — Cairo | |
Saturday. 9th March [1895]. My wedding day. The first alone. I thought much of this day last year when we were so happy together & could recall almost every hour of it. The presents & flowers we received—the dinner, the dance when Henry & I danced Sir Roger together. How happy we were—& all gone like a dream. I meant to have taken my luncheon & to have gone out to sketch alone but it was so chilly & cloudy that I could not sketch & I thought God meant me to be brave. It was not easy—as the Blues had a fête here & there was much bustle & noise. I kept in my room as much as I could. We lunched at 12.30 & then the Blues party had luncheons & their band played. Mrs Hitchin kindly asked me to go & sit with her in her room as it [was] quieter there & the band was playing under my window. At 3 everyone went off to the fete races &c. I sat in my room & read & painted & had tea at 5. Soon after Elaine came in & said Mr Mossop wanted to know if I wanted to go for a walk so I left a letter I was writing & we went for a couple of miles into the desert & it was dark when we got back. As I went along I kept thinking how odd it was that the day year of my silver wedding I should be walking with a stranger in a strange land & trying to interest myself in him. We dined later than usual & a good many of the Cairo people stayed for the dance in the hotel. I went up & played patience & was joined by Lady Ashburton who sat talking for an hour. | |
