17 March 1895 — Cairo | |
Sunday. 17th [March 1895]. Elaine & I went across the steam ferry & walked from Boulac to the English church. After the service we went to the Hotel Angleterre to visit the Churchills & on to Princess Nazli Khanum’s to lunch. Met there Mr Justice Donald Cameron whom I had known at Consple when he came as a young student interpreter. Nazli gave us an excellent lunch and unfortunately too much of it—so that when towards the end Turkish dishes such as “Burek” & “pollow” were served one could hardly eat it. We left her about 3 & walked to a flower shop near Shepherds & bought some freesias & then went back to Ghesireh & had tea under the verandah. Lord & Lady Cromer called & sat there with us a little while & then I went to sit a little while with the Dss of Buckingham who is recovering from an illness she had after we saw her on the Nile & is still weak. She was kind & pleasant. Messrs Mossop & de Barreto went to Mena House today & the former formally proposed for Aline Lambton. They returned & dined with us & he confided to Elaine that all is settled to his satisfaction. It was a cold evening & we could not sit out of doors so Elaine sang & played the piano in the large drawing room & then we took leave of our compagnons de voyage who leave for Marseilles tomorrow. | |
