19 March 1895 — Cairo
Tuesday. 19th [March 1895]. We got up early & went in to Cairo abt 10.30 to the Hotel d’Angleterre to join the Misses Churchill who accompanied us to the Bazaars to help us to make purchases. I bought £8.10 worth of Syrian silks for Mrs Bronson. We also went to the tent bazaars but bought nothing there. Miss Daisy Churchill & I got back to the Angleterre as arranged at 12.30 but Miss Violet & Elaine did not turn up till one. So they begged us to stay to lunch with them which we did. At 2 Elaine & I started in an arabiyeh to drive back to the Ghesireh. On arriving at the bridge found it was still open & boats passing thro. While waiting M. de Naville came by & having also to wait he stood & talked to us & was very pleasant. We just got our wraps & cloaks & then set off in a little pony trap which had been sent for us from Mena House & Elaine drove me out to Mena to see the Lambtons. Had tea with them. I paid a little visit to Lady Ashburton & also to Mrs Miles. I did not find Mrs Hitchin who was out walking. We started off back to Ghesireh abt 4. Elaine tried a new road which made us very late but it was a lovely evening & we drove thro’ gardens the air faint with the perfumes of orange blossoms. We reached Ghesireh in time to dress for dinner.
