26 March 1895 — Cairo
Tuesday. 26th March [1895]. I breakfasted in my room at 8 & at 9.30 started in an open carriage for the Hotel d’Angleterre to call for Mr Cartwright. We went off thro’ old Cairo to the Mosque el Hakim where we wanted to see the Arabic Museum. We found it was closed till the end of the week, today being the last of Ramadan & the next days being Beiram. It was very disappointing. We looked at the ruins of the mosque & the curious pylon shaped towers surmounted with minarets. From here we went to the Mosque el Bakuf which is small & very picturesque having a tomb in the very centre of it. Thence to the Mosque                close by & saw an inner court yard which used to be used as a hospital. We finished up with the Mosque Ibrahim which is most picturesque. The interior is a court open to the air in the midst are planted Palms– All round a colonnade roofed in & one side the Kibla & the wall all tiled with Persian blue & white tiles. It was all thro’ most picturesque streets that we went with charming bits of lattice work & carving &c &c. At 12 we drove to the Angleterre where I dropped Mr Cartwright & then returned to Ghesireh to lunch. The Lambtons & Elaine drove to see the tombs of the Caliphs. I sat in the garden. Mrs Miles, Lady Aberdare’s sister drove in from Mena & had tea with me in the verandah. I sketched a little & then came in & wrote letters. Just before dinner Lady Ashburton’s dragoman came to tell me that she & Miss Arbuthnot had arrived from Mena to stay here. I went up to see her & then returned again to her after dinner.
