14 April 1895 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 14th [April 1895]. Easter Sunday. A heavy bora blowing but we managed to get to church in the gondola but did not go out again. After dinner Ola & Elaine went up early to bed. I came to the library to write to Sophy Palmer. I went to bed abt 11. Undressed & Felicie went off at 11.20. I went out a few minutes after to get another candle & was in the anteroom when suddenly all the windows of the house shook. I fancied a window in the hall must have blown in as the wind had been so high when the walls of the house began to weave & rock & I perceived it was an earthquake. I thought Elaine wd be frightened & wonder what was happening so I rushed to her room & found her at her door. We were soon joined by Ola & remained together a little while & then made up our minds to return to our beds– My nerves were a good deal upset & I trembled all over so Elaine insisted on returning with me & sleeping in my room. We had hardly been in bed ½ hour when there came another shock & we flew out again to Ola’s room. But it was less severe so we concluded the danger was less. We propped open our doors ready for flight if necessary & put out our candles. There were several more shocks till 8 A.M. & we had little sleep.
