14 June 1895 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Friday. 14th June [1895]. Breakfast in my room & down late. Lady Gregory came to lunch & Monty came in shortly after to say he has not been successful in getting the rent of 3 Savile Row reduced & asked if we had not better look out for another house & told me to go & see a house in St James’ Place of wh he has heard– At 3 Augusta & I drove out. I went to Mr Clark to again talk over the inscription & then we went to St James Place in search of the house. Not finding it we went to Lunday the house agent in St James St & with some mystery he asked me if I would go with him to see it & we walked across with him. It certainly is a most charming house freshly painted & with a delightful view on Green Park & is most attractive. It now belongs to Lord Dudley. We drove at 5 to the Temple & had tea with Arthur Du Cane at his lodgings 4 Kings Bench Walk. Met Mr Albert Gray (Lady Millais’ brother). I then drove Lady Gregory to her Mansions & then sent the carriage home & walked thro’ St James’ Park to 3 Savile Row to try to find Monty & tell him to go to see the house in St James’ Place. Found Nelly in her studio & took her back to Q. Anne St to dine with me.
