9 August 1895 — Canford Manor, nr. Wimborne, Dorset
Friday. 9th August [1895]. Canford. Sat in Elaine’s sitting room & she wrote letters—also sat with Rosie awhile & she played the piano to me. She plays rather well. Monty was expected over from Cowes to luncheon as he wanted to see me about my going to Savile Row. He turned up just as we had finished luncheon. Having had to take the train to Bournemouth he had come on to Canford on his bycicle & had only about an hour to spend here & get back to Wimborne to catch a train & return to Cowes. We had a talk & he gave me various papers to show to Richard Du Cane & get his advice on the subject. In the afternoon Elaine took me in the pony carriage to Wimborne to an Exhibition of Miss M. Bernard’s watercolour drawings. I found to my dismay the room full of people. The drawings are clever but vapid & slight. Had a talk to Canon Bernard & then we left & Elaine drove me round by Corfe Mullen & Misty home. We played a game of croquet with Rosie. Sat in Elaine’s room in eveng & played “knuckle bones.”
