10 August 1895 — Canford Manor, nr. Wimborne, Dorset
Saturday. 10th August [1895]. Elaine left for Berrington after breakfast. I stayed with Rosie walked & played croquet with her. A party came over to lunch from Branksome Dene—Nela, Ola, a twin & Miss Green the late Governess to the Princesses of Prussia. I showed her over the house & took her to the garden. Maria had been to luncheon with Revd H. & Mrs Glyn (Mr Schreiber’s sister) at Wimborne & she joined us at 4 & then we drove back to Branksome Dene. The girls returned by train. Richard Du Cane came from London. I consulted him about Savile Row. He advises me to go there for 2 years on Monty’s old Lease & to accept an offer for 1 Q. Anne Street of a premium of £500. Played patience with Maria in eveng. My new maid Annie Lawes came to me today– I wonder how long she will stay. I never seem to be able to keep a maid since Mrs Hill left me!
