11 August 1895 — Canford Manor, nr. Wimborne, Dorset
Sunday. 11th August [1895]. Maria & I walked to church in the morning but there was such a crowd that we could not get in so we walked back & sat in the garden & Maria read to me out of Mama’s journal till lunch. After lunch she, Richard, a twin & I drove over to Foxholes nr Christchurch to pay a visit to Mr & Mrs Henry Reeve & they were at home. Mr Reeve I thought much changed since last year. He has grown older & weaker and more flabby. He welcomed me kindly & we had a nice talk about foreign politics & about the publishing of Henry’s MSS which he advises me to keep back. Lina Duff Gordon was staying there. She said she had that morning had a letter to tell her her father Sir Maurice had gone quite mad & had been put into a madhouse.
