16 August 1895 — Bere Cottage, Bere Regis, Dorset
Friday. 16th [August 1895]. Remained in bed late. Washed my hair & so was not down much before lunch. Arthur left at 2 to go to Scotland, & Lionel returned to Canford– Nelly, Lady Cecil & I remained. We sat quiet till 4 as it was very hot & then we drove in the van to Woodlands & had tea near the weir & Lady Cecil fished but got nothing & Nelly went off to a cricket match near. She returned abt 7.30 & then drove us home– We dined at 8.30. I played Patience in the evening. Had a good deal of talk with Lady Cecil. She is delicate & rather pretty. She is highly nervous & believes in 2nd sight. She told me that when she was engaged her husband was away in India & twice was in danger of his life. Each time at the moment it happened she had seen the whole thing. Once having woke at 5 A.M. & seen it.
