10 September 1895 — Milton Court, nr. Dorking, Surrey
Tuesday. 10th September [1895]. Mr Reeve returned to London. I sat in the porch & sketched the sundial for Css Pisani. Aubrey Waterfield came to stay & also Miss Dolly Parry. After lunch Mrs Rate, Enid, Aubrey & I drove in the Victoria to Holmbury to see Mr F. Leveson Gower. It was overcast & threatened to rain but it did not rain much– We found the old gentleman alone & he received us very kindly. Took us out to his garden to see some new hot houses he is building & to get Mrs Rate’s opinion & advice. He gave us tea & we drove home. He was very kind & expressed himself pleased to see me. We have known him for many years– Admiral Maxey dined at Milton. A disagreeable manner—paying the girls exaggerated compliments. He is also fastidious about his food, brought a small flask of brandy in his pocket & took B & water.
