15 September 1895 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Sunday. 15th [September 1895]. Breakfast in bed at 8. Walked to St Margaret’s Westminster—a church I like to go to—& where—the last service for Henry was– Walked back by lunch time. As I came thro’ St James’s Park I went round to look at the back of the old house at Spring Gardens where my father lived when I was a small child. The house is the same & I recognised our nursery windows, but a large kind of office is built out in the garden. I believe the house is now a Govt Office & the rooms where my mother gave her celebrated “balls of roses” is now occupied by clerks. There are still cows tethered up in the park near our garden wall as there used to be when I was a child & as there have been since the time of Charles I.
