26 December 1895 — 3 Savile Row
Thursday. 26th December [1895]. I woke with a headache & remained in bed till 12 o’cl but a dose of phenacetine had a marvellous effect in curing me in ½ hour. The day was dark wet & dreary. Monty looked in upon me before he went out. After lunch I typewrote till 3 when I felt I must get a breath of air after being shut in 3 days so I put on furs & walked up to Park Crescent & saw Maria & then hurried back home. It was Bank holiday & the great town seemed quite empty. No carriages a few omnibuses & fewer cabs—& very few foot passengers. Louis Du Cane came to see me just before dinner. Typewrote in evening.
