27 December 1895 — 3 Savile Row
Friday. 27th [December 1895]. I was called before 7 & went off by 8 o’cl train to Dorking. It was only just light when I started & very foggy & not much better when I reached Dorking. The Rates’ carriage was at the station & took me to Milton where I found the family hardly finished breakfast & I sat down to it with them. At 11.30 Alice R drove me in the brougham to Spring Farm to see what was done. I found the garden improved & Mrs Young the caretaker at work—all satisfactory. We went back to lunch at Milton. I returned by 4.50 train to London. Lina Duff Gordon accompanied me to the station & put me in the train. Typewrote in eveng & went to bed early.
