Friday. 3rd January [1896]. Horribly foggy & dark all day. Great excitement about Dr Jameson at the Transvaal. He has begun to fight the Boers in disobedience to our Govt orders—& is said to have been defeated & taken prisoner. The Germ. Emp. going against us– Maria came down to see me in the morning & proposed taking me out for a drive & called for me at 3 o’cl. We drove in utter darkness owing to the fog & brought me home at 4.30. Nela & Evely Eliot came to tea & were joined by Connie & Bee– The two girls went off & left their mother here & she left abt 6. Nela stayed till 7. Type wrote. | |
