18 January 1896 — Springfield Lodge, nr. Dorking, Surrey
Saturday. 18th January [1896]. We had a busy morning arranging the rooms & preparing for our guests. After lunch Kate & I walked across the fields to Milton to see Mrs Rate who is still in her room though out of bed. We then hurried back by 4.15 & got to Springfield just as a cab drove up bringing Maria & her twins but no Richard. However he turned up later having missed the train. We were 7 of us & all comfortable. Cox helped the servants & was most useful. Edward was staying at Milton & walked over to see us.
