19 February 1896 — 3 Savile Row
Wednesday. 19th [February 1896]. Painted all morning & Annie my maid sat to us. Nela came as usual. Just after lunch Connie came to ask for some lunch & after I had fed her I walked out with Nela to call on the Rates & there met Mr Austin the new Poet Laureate—a painful contrast to the last dear Tennyson. He is grey, rather good looking but very short. He has the reputation of being very conceited & rather vulgar but is unfeignedly happy with his new honors—& that is a satisfaction to see. Nela & I resumed our walk & I helped her to buy a cast to draw & she returned to tea with me– Nelly had 2 friends Mr Musgrave & Mr Glyn to tea–
