21 April 1896 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 21st [April 1896]. Today the weather was fine again & somewhat warmer– Mr Hogarth came in the morning to see the pictures & fell upon us (Mrs Rate & I) busy gardening & having the plants in the entrance on the grand canal arranged & washed– Mr Hogarth seemed very pleasant. I had made his acquaintance in Egypt where he was digging with M. Neville at Dair el Bahari. After luncheon Mr & Mrs Humphry Ward called & I liked them better than when I first saw them. Mr H. Ward was evidently much impressed by the pictures & became more pleasant. At 3 I went out with the Rates & left Mr & Lady Harriet Cavendish with Aline Lambton. We went to Rietti’s to look thro’ his antiquities but Mrs Rate saw nothing she cared to buy. We thence went to the Montalbas & Clara showed us her sketches. A good many people came while we were there amongst them 2 Ladies Legge– We left there abt 4.30 & went to leave some cards & I took the Rates to see the external staircase of the Palazzo della Congregazion della Carita at Piazza Manin & then home. Mr Montalba brought home the wooden statue of S. Diego & which I had lent his sister to paint from—& then he remained on chatting. Iduna Bel. came & later Signor Trombini & the latter remained till after the dressing bell for dinner (7.30). Aline got up for lunch but went to bed again before dinner. The sposi went out in gondola after dinner. Mrs Rate & I played patience.
