23 April 1896 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 23rd April [1896]. Dr Cini came to see Aline & allowed her to go down stairs. I helped her to paint flowers in the studio & wrote some letters. Mrs Rate & the Sposi went sight seeing. Aline came down to lunch. I wrote to her mother to say Cini advises her to go straight home & that she had better come & fetch her. After lunch I went out in shut gondola with the Rate party. It had rained in the morning but was now cleared up. We went to the Brazzoduro garden & bought flower pots– Returned home to 5 o’cl tea. Css Revedin, Miss Marsh Philipps & Miss Webster (recommended by Lady Amory), Mr Talbot Watson (recd by Freddie Guest), Mrs Eden, Mr Reeve (rector of Lambeth) & Css Canevaro all came to tea. Enid Rate & Ersilia sang. Later came Hilda & Augustus Montalba– In eveng patience. Mr Talbot Watson came from the Transvaal & had lived at Johannesberg—& told me abt Jameson what a fine fellow he was but how sad it was he had made his raid a fortnight too soon– Mr Watson said he had been on the stock exchange there & was now going on the London Exchange. He is quite young. He had left Freddie at Cairo.
