24 April 1896 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 24th [April 1896]. The Rates went out sightseeing. I took care of Aline in the morning & helped her to paint. Mr Reeve lunched & dined with us. After lunch I took the Rates to the Lido in gondola. We rowed to S. Elisabetta. It was a lovely day & quite warm. We drove in the tram to the baths & thence walked along the shore to the Favorita. The sea was blue & it was lovely & made me sadder than ever. We walked back to the gondola by the other side of the Lido towards Venice. Got home abt 6. Mme Wiel came also Iduna Bel. In the morng Mrs J. Green & her friend Mr Strong the librarian to the D. of Devonshire came to see the pictures. A queer vulgar looking kind of man but said to be immensely clever. There was a short thunderstorm towards evening.
