25 April 1896 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 25th [April 1896]. We breakfasted at 8.30 & the Rate party went with Mr Reeve to St Marks to the service as it was St Mark’s day. I remained at home with Aline. Wrote letters &c. Enid Rate was not very well & did not go. Mr Reeve came to lunch & then I took him & Mrs Rate out in gondola went to Rietti’s shop & they bought lace– It was bright but the wind cold. We dropt Mr Reeve at the Piazza & returned home. Iduna brought Sir Arnold & Lady Kemball & Miss Kemball to tea & we also had Mr & Lady Katherine Somerset—also Lady Ripon whom I had not seen for a long time. Lord Ripon had been a great friend of Henry’s when they were young & Lord R. was Lord Goodrich. She has lost very good looks & is thin & old, but her manner was bright kind & pleasant as ever. She promises to come again. Lady Kemball seemed very little altered. Her daughter was pretty but silent & held an ugly little dog in her arms. Sir Arnold looked much as he used to but grown heavier & was silent leaving the talking to his wife. Mr Reeve dined with us.
