13 June 1896 — Ca’ Capello, Venice | |
Saturday. 13th [June 1896]. Copied Montagna. Lady & Miss Smith called & later Miss Smith & a girl to see the pictures. After lunch Augusta & I read aloud to each other the Promessi Sposi. At 5 Css Pisani came to tea & also Clara & Ellen Montalba– The latter went out with us in gondola & we brought Clara home to dine with us. Sir Charles & Lady Evan Smith & Mr & Mrs Curtis dined with me. Sir C. was very entertaining giving us descriptions of India & stories of his campaign in Abyssinia when he was on Lord Napier’s staff. Ellen came to fetch Clara at 10.30 when everyone left & we went to bed. | |
