25 June 1896 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 25th June [1896]. In the night the ferro of our gondola was stolen. The servants think it is done to spite me & suspicions fall on our late gondolier Luigi. I went to inform the police but do not expect it will be heard of. I wrote letters & arranged some of Henry’s papers till lunch– All of the time we were at Madrid– A sad task. After lunch sat & worked a bit in the green boudoir with Augusta & then returned to the papers. At 4 we went out in sandolo to the Piazza to ask abt a pearl necklace for Blanche. Home to tea at 5. Visit from Passini & fm Baron Krauss—& then we went out again for a row & Augusta went to the Frari to an antiquity shop– Home to dinner. Sent the servants out in the sandolo in the eveng as there was a serenade.
