26 June 1896 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 26th [June 1896]. I finished a strip of embroidery I got as I came here thro’ Milan & sent it to my sister Blanche as a present. Traced a pattern for a new piece of embroidery. It was a very hot morning & the weather overcast & there was a good deal of thunder & then about 4 a deluge of rain. Mrs Eden came to tea—to say good bye to Lady Gregory who was not very well & rather low. We went out in the closed gondola to the Piazza & bought beads for her to give to Irish children & then came straight home as it continued to rain & the thermometer fell 10 degrees Faht from 80º to 70º. As I write it is still raining hard—but the cool temperature promises a good sleep. Everyone is much amused & interested at the end of the search for the body of the Prince of Orange at Padua– His coffin has been found outside the church—very near where they had recently been searching. It is a mystery which will probably never be cleared up– Probably the priests wd not let the body be put in the Sacristy & so it was put outside the wall. It is said that the masons receipt for placing it there was found in the city archives(?)
