1 July 1896 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 1st July [1896]. My 53rd birthday. I breakfasted in my own room & read Dante. Got a note & a little knife for my chatelane from Iduna Belmondo. A busy morning arranging books & putting drawers in order in Henry’s library. I had promised to go out to Lido with Iduna & Aimée at 4 but it began to rain & a storm came up with sheets of rain so thick that one cd hardly see across the canal. Carry Eden came to tea & also M. le Mallier the French Consul General who lives next door to me in the Palazzo Grimani. A nice looking pleasant man. After him came Iduna & Aimée & I went out with them for a row & we got abt as far as Danieli’s hotel when we saw it looked black & we turned homewards & hastened thro’ the small canals. We were however caught by heavy rain & took shelter several times under the bridges & at last made a dash for it & got home—rather the worse for the rain as we had only one umbrella amongst 3. It was stormy & rainy all the evening. I began to read Villari’s life of Machiavelli & played patience. It is a wild night.
