3 July 1896 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 3rd [July 1896]. Up as usual at 7. Finished reading “Dante’s Inferno”. Breakfast in my room– Left Venice by 10.55 train for Belluno. Had to change trains at Treviso & arrived at Belluno at 3.40. The 4 English servants went also. Was met at the station at Belluno by the brother of the Cav. Eng. Giacomini owner of the Villa Mier which I have taken for 2 months. He met me at the villa about ¼ hour’s drive from the town of Belluno. It is very prettily situated on a hill & the drive to it is under a hornbeam avenue cut so as to form a thick shade. The villa is long—2 stories high & stands in the midst of green field looking South. I discussed a little with the owner & he left & I had tea– Bertha has been here since Monday & she took me over the house & we settled which rooms were to be occupied. The bedrooms are up on 2nd floor & I have a pleasant room at the corner with 4 windows. The sitting rooms are below & a stone balcony leads out of the corner drawing room. Dined at 8. Patience & bed early.
