27 August 1896 — Palazzo Barbaro, Venice
Thursday. 27th August [1896]. Dr Cini came to see me & forbad my going off now to the Empress’– So I telegraph[ed] to explain that I could not come. Dr Cini tells me that Princess Olga Montenegro is seriously ill—nay dying—from cancer. She had an operation last year for it—& this year the disease has declared itself internally & fixed on her lungs. This is a great shock to us all—& grieves us much– The Bishop of Ely & Lady Alwyne Compton & her niece Miss Anderson, Miss L. Gordon & Miss Soulsby came to tea with Mrs Curtis also Genl de Horsey.
