9 September 1896 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 9th [September 1896]. Typed all morning. At 3.30 went to see Mlle Aspasie & found her very sad. Olga getting slowly worse—from there went to tea at 4 with Iduna Belmondo & met there Admiral Duke de San Felice– A pleasant man. Went on to the Lido landed at S. Elisabetta & walked by the shore to Quattro Fontane where we met the gondola & came home. I read aloud Christina Rossetti’s Poems to Sophy. There was a magnificent sunset—very red—& as it got dark it seemed sad—the poetry I read until it was too dark to see—seemed strangely à propos.
