22 September 1896 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 22nd [September 1896]. Signor Frizzoni came to see me in the morning & went round the pictures in this house to examine those which required some little thing done to them & to give his advice. At 12 I went off to Palazzo Molin to see Aspasie. I found a service going on after wh poor Olga was put into her coffin. I waited outside the room till poor Aspasie was brought out almost fainting & I took charge of her took her to her room—made her lie down & then went home to lunch & returned directly after to stay with her till the end. Css Papadopoli was there & Mme Jonin & Mlle Nana Valmarana but they then left me with Aspasie & saw after other details. I made Aspasie take some food helped her to dress—& soon after 4 when the coffin was on the barge we all set off. A nephew of Aspasie’s came just before we started & he & I accompanied Aspasie & the small procession set off to go to the steamer which was to take the coffin & Aspasie to Montenegro. We all went on board & waited for a while until a funeral wreath arrived from the Queen of Italy & abt 6 they sailed. The Montalbas were at the ship & they took me off in their gondola to their house—from whence Clara & Hilda accompanied me on foot to my house. I was thoroughly worn out when I got home—& went early to bed. Jack & Nevil went for a row after dinner as it was hot & fine & moonlight.
