24 September 1896 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 24th [September 1896]. Typed. Cortelazzo arrived from Vicenza & stayed a few hours—leaving again at 2 P.M. After lunch I went off to Hotel Britannia to the Saxe Meiningens & we went an expedition in the Arsenal steam launch to Burano. Lt Tornielli was in charge. It was fine when we started but there were heavy clouds & a storm gathered up with very fine effects. We landed at Burano & went to the Lace school where Princess Charlotte bought & ordered lace. On coming back to the launch we found tea all laid out & we had that meal as soon as we started back to Venice. The sky had by this time become as black as ink & the storm soon came down—rain & lightening but it was not as heavy as we might have expected & seemed to go off over the land– At the Britannia when we got there I found the gondola waiting which brought me home.
