25 September 1896 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 25th September [1896]. Typed– The Saxe Meiningens came to tea at 4.30 & to meet then Iduna Bel & Mr Woods. Css Olga Mocenigo & her daughter & her sister Pss Adine Windischgrätz & Mrs & Miss Parnis also happened to come in to call– They all stayed quite late. The weather changed about 5—& it began to pour so that I had to send them back to the Hotel in my closed gondola. The Prince brought with him to show me his Hammond type writer wh he declares is the best of all– The great joke is that they call it his “bride” Mrs Hammond as he is so devoted to it & carries it abt with him wherever he goes– It is smaller than the Remington but I could not see the immense superiority of it. Princess Charlotte brought me a new photo of herself framed. Jack & I took a walk after lunch together to the station & Piazza whence we returned in gondola. Nevil did not go out. Mrs Willy Hanson & Kathleen arrived by 6.30 train from Milan to stay with me. We played patience in evening.
