15 October 1896 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 15th [October 1896]. A most fearful storm blew today & there was a very high tide. The Gordons went out to the Piazza to see the boats going about in it. There were tremendous gusts of wind wh seemed to be about to blow in our windows. The calle outside our land door was ankle deep in water. I did not go out. Mr Montalba came—brought paints with him & worked till after lunch at painting the bust of Ola which was covered with spots. When he left about 3 o’cl he had to get our gondolier to carry him pick a back out of our door so as not to get wet shoes. I copied the Savoldo for a little while but it was too dark to do much. Mr Carey came about 6– The storm had abated & the wind changed—so there was a fine night.
