1 January 1897 — Canford Manor, nr. Wimborne, Dorset
Friday. 1st January [1897]. I had begun to copy the picture by Velasquez in the dining room here (Canford) & I went on with it today till 12 when Francie Thesiger & I set off to drive to Bournemouth to have luncheon with Fanny Duchess of Marlborough who is staying at Branksome Dene lent to her by Ivor. We found the old lady alone & very whiney & low—but by degrees we cheered up & after lunch she got into her garden chair & went round the garden with us. It was a lovely bright day & was quite warm there. We saw there the cliff in the garden had fallen away, & where Old Harry’s wife had disappeared on the Purbeck Point—one of the points of the cliff that stood erect was washed entirely in the gale of last week & Old Harry is now wifeless. We started home at 3.30– I left Francie at the Canford Vicarage to call on Mrs Fawkes & I went home & had tea in my room & rested till dinner as I had a headache—but I went down to dinner & played patience in the evening.
