17 January 1897 — 3 Savile Row
Sunday. 17th [January 1897]. My sister Constance came to fetch me & we went to the 12 o’cl service at the Chapel Royal. Heard Canon Fleming preach—not much impressed. Coming out met the Duchess of Buckingham & Lord Egerton of Tatton. They begged me to go & see them & I will do so. The Archbishop of York also spoke to me on coming out & walked a little way with us up St James St. He tells me [he] thinks of going next summer to Moscow to see the Greek church authorities. He also repeated to me what he had before said viz that the Romish Church was not gaining in England. This is always a great comfort to me. Fred Thesiger called on me this afternoon– Eda & I went to 7 o’cl evening service at St James’ Piccadilly & had dinner at 8.30.
