7 February 1897 — 3 Savile Row
Sunday. 7th February [1897]. I got up abt 9. At 10.30 I was dressing for church when Connie appeared to see if I was going to the Chapel Royal so we went there together to the 12 o’cl service. I walked on after service to 83 Eaton Square to lunch with the American Ambr and Mrs Bayard. Happily they were alone & I had a most pleasant visit to them. Mr Bayard was very chatty & talked delightfully on all sorts of subjects. He explained the Monroe doctrine to me. We discussed the Queen of whom he is a great admirer also the P. of Wales to whom he gave credit for many great qualities. I stayed there till past 3 & took a hansom to come home. Mr Herbert Thompson came abt 5 & had tea with me & before he left his father Sir Henry came in & also Duncannon & his daughter Irène. Lady Gregory dined with me & we had a pleasant quiet evening.
