29 April 1897 — Bessborough, Fiddown, County Kilkenny
Thursday. 29th [April 1897]. Gave the boys an Italian lesson. Irène read to me as usual before breakfast. I began to sketch a portrait of Irène in charcoal. After lunch the 4 young people went off to a paper chase– Bertie being dressed up in a red coat wh had belonged to his grandfather. It came on to rain so I gave up going to the meet & did not go out, wrote letters & read. They returned to tea at 5 having enjoyed themselves spite of the bad weather.
