19 May 1897 — Coole Park, Gort, County Galway
Wednesday. 19th [May 1897]. Typed & began a water colour copy of the portrait of Richard Gregory which Augusta wants to present to Harrow school—as he was the founder of a scholarship there. After lunch we drove in the car to Gort & visited at the Convent there the Work room superintended by sister Philomena with whom I had been in correspondence from London– Some girls were weaving coloured linen—others embroidering—& all at work– I was shown all their performances by Sister Philomena who was in charge of the work room & discussed with her how to make more things wh would be saleable. After this we went on to see the Work house & Augusta took sugar sticks for the small children there. The nun in charge took me to see one of the wards & then we drove away back to Coole by tea time. Afterwards a walk in the woods till dinner & then A. read aloud to me till bed time.
