23 June 1897 — 40 Half Moon Street
Wednesday. 23rd [June 1897]. Breakfasted in bed & at 4 Nelly Alderson & I set out to walk to Buckingham Palace to write our names on the Empress Fred., her daughters & Our Queen– We did all but the Queen’s book as it was still up in her rooms so we walked to Savile Row & I sat & talked to Kate. After luncheon Elaine Guest came to see me & took me out driving with her. We went to Buck. Palace to write our names in the Queen’s book. There was a great crowd there doing the same thing. Then Elaine went shopping & when we tried to get thro’ the Park on our way back to Savile Row we found that the Queen was expected to pass that way & we were turned back we had to make our way by Belgrave Sqr (from Albert Gate), Buckingham Gate, St James’ Square & Piccadilly. Kate had gone out driving with our sister Blanche & did not return home till 7 quite exhausted & in tears. Their carriage had got blocked in the Park near Queen’s Gate—& from there Kate had walked alone & suddenly found herself in a crowd of pedestrians & had great difficulty with her lameness in making her way home—besides being much alarmed. Mr Wyld dined with us & took Nelly & Mary Alderson and to see the illuminations. Kate & I went early to bed & as some of her sons had left town I was able to return to my own house & Kate slept with me in my room. The Riddings left.
