11 July 1897 — Bere Cottage, Bere Regis, Dorset
Sunday. 11th [July 1897]. Maria was not very well in the night so I did not go to church in the morning but sat with her. Arthur left us & returned to town directly after lunch. Ruth & I went to evening service at 6. Last night I had a talk to Arthur abt his plans. He seemed to fear he must give up this place as too expensive for him– He says he must add to his son’s income. I told him I would willingly join with him here if I lived in England—but I could not give up Venice– They hardly understand how I cling to Venice.
