21 July 1897 — Bere Cottage, Bere Regis, Dorset
Wednesday. 21st [July 1897]. Showery weather & no fishing in the morning. Worked & carved. At 4 Mr Mansell Pleydell came with his cousin Mr Morton Stewart & I see that I misjudged his appearance & that he is a harmless & pleasant man—caring for flowers wh is a good trait. I showed him Arthur’s carnations which are just now in full beauty. Gave him & Mr Pleydell tea & they sat talking & hearing Edgar’s wonderful tales abt queer animals in the different climes he has been to—the Cape—Ceylon, New Hebrides, Fiji, New Caledonia, Brazil &c. As soon as they had gone we went off to Cobbs to fish & Edgar caught 2 fish & was pleased. We stayed on till dark—& had supper at 9—& then played besique.
