9 August 1897 — Milton Court, nr. Dorking, Surrey
Monday. 9th [August 1897]. Walked in the garden with Mrs Rate. At 3 I got a telegram from Dr Chamberlain saying he could see me at 5 this afternoon to stop my tooth so a carriage was quickly got ready & in 20 minutes I was off to the station to catch the 3.47 to London. I got there 2 minutes before the time & the train was 15 minutes late. Consequently I was ¼ hour late for my appointment. However Dr Chamberlain was still at home & he worked away at my mouth for more than an hour. I then walked home to Savile Row & found Lady Margaret Jenkins there having just arrived from Bere & I am giving her hospitality for a couple of nights. Lord Norbury fetched her & took her out to dinner. I had some food on a tray in the drawing room & went early to bed.
