11 August 1897 — Milton Court, nr. Dorking, Surrey
Wednesday. 11th [August 1897]. I tuned & learnt an instrument called the Autoharp “Erato” which Mrs Rate has just got. It is very simple—a sort of zither—the chords ingeniously made by pressing down stops which render certain notes dumb. It is a German invention. At 12 Mrs Rate & I set off to drive to Pratsham Grange to lunch with Sir Henry & Lady Thompson. It took an hour to drive there. It is a house they have hired for the summer of a Mr & Mrs Holmsley—beautifully situated. Mr Rate became great friends with Sir Henry who is in great force. Lady Thompson gentle & kind as ever– We got back to Milton at 5. Walked in the garden with Mrs Rate. In eveng taught Margie to play the Auto Harp.
