18 September 1897 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 18th September [1897]. After lunch went in gondola with Lady V. to the Edens garden & got a few flowers & came back home to tea. Css Canevaro & her sister Maria Cozzi, Mrs Montalba & her daughter Ellen, Mr Ch. Hallé & his sister. Genl de Horsey, Mr Carey & Mr & Mrs Peirce Way Jr all came to tea– Afterwards Lady V. & I went for a row till dinner. Came home at 7 & found a note from the Brandolins asking me to dine earlier—as after dining with us they had to go to meet the Q. of Italy at the Exhibition at the Giardini Publici. So we dined at 7.45 & they left directly after. Lady V. & I went to see the Queen start from the Palace. She was accompanied by boats with Bengal lights & it was a pretty scene– We returned to the Piazzetta & took a turn or two while the band played & then returned home to bed.
