19 September 1897 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 19th [September 1897]. Lady V. & I went to the morning service held at the Grand Hotel during the church repairs. Afterwards we went into the Accademia for an hour & walked home. There was thunder & a good deal of rain after lunch so we sat embroidering & chatting till tea. It then cleared a bit. Mr Hamilton Aidé & Mrs Jack Gardner came to tea. She is a rich, rather vulgar & very plain, American. We went for a row before dinner & went to the Giudecca to see the remains of a great fire which took place at Stucky flour mills last night & which caused great damage. Having applied for an audience of the Queen of Italy we got a notice inviting us to go at 2 tomorrow.
