2 October 1897 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 2nd October [1897]. Still heavy scirocco. Breakfast at 9. Marchese & Marchesa Guiccioli came to lunch & I showed them the pictures & over the house– The Thesigers & Nela went off to the Lido for the afternoon. I went out in gondola to call on the Alwyn Comptons who are lodging at the Palazzo Tiepoletto, they were at home & I sat with them a little & then went on to call on the Montalbas who were also in & had a good many people with them, amongst them Sir Henry & Lady Maxwell Lyte. I did not stay long but returned home to tea. Sir Henry, Lady & Miss Mallet came to tea, also Mrs Bethune & a young lady friend of hers & then a Miss Filder of Rome. The scirocco was so oppressive that entertaining was hard work. A storm seemed imminent & it got very dark. In the evening the Thesigers went out in gondola. I went off to bed.
