9 October 1897 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 9th [October 1897]. Wrote letters in the morning. Francie & Nela had drawing lesson in the downstairs hall. I went out in the sandolo with Fred. In the morning as I came up the stairs to bed there was an unpleasant smell from the kitchen which caused me to go in to see what it arose from. I found the kitchen still in disorder & neither cook or her girl there. I called & they came & I ordered the scrap box to be at once removed & told them to finish their work & go to bed. I went off to my room, undressed & got into bed. Nela stayed awhile talking to me. As she left I said I was anxious abt the kitchen & I got up & we went there together. There was a horrid smell still & a thumping noise in the stove. When we took the cover off & looked in we found the stove positively stuffed with meat! & as there was no air the stove was in danger of explosion. As soon as we raked out the meat the fat blazed up & we had to open all the windows. Finally I went back to bed but so worried & indignant did not sleep much.
