10 October 1897 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. [10th October 1897]. Sunday morning (10) at breakfast I put the matter before Fred Thesiger & told him also how the footman had suddenly also rebelled & refused to do his duty. Fred advised me to send away both the cook & Rawlinson at once paying them a month’s wages instead of notice. I at once went to the kitchen & told the cook she should leave tomorrow & then gave the same notice to Rawlinson giving no particular reasons—which I knew was not necessary—as their consciences must have told them. Went with Nela & the Thesigers to the English service & at 2.30 we went in gondola to the Lido & sketched there & made tea on the sands at 4 Fontane getting home abt 6. After dinner we walked to the Piazza & back where the band was playing & sat at Florian’s & had coffee. To bed at 11.
