8 December 1897 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 8th [December 1897]. Fête of Immaculate Conception. Nela & I went out to the Piazza where the band was playing. Nela & I went in to St Mark’s Church & just happened to see the procession of priests carrying the shrine containing the Madonna from the high altar to her own side chapel. It was a picturesque sight—the priests with their purple capes with lighted candles & shouting as they went—but it struck me as a very heathenish performance. Css Olga Mocenigo came in to the Church just after with her baby grandson & there we made his acquaintance just as tho’ we had been outside instead of inside a Church. Home to tea & had a visit from Passini the artist who is leaving for Berlin tomorrow. Css Brazza (Vera) also came, Mrs Hulton & Baroness de Pury.
